The painting happens to me in that half awake, half-asleep place, a state of being where I sort of think I'm aware of where I am. However, memories, nature's primal shadows, and all the physical aspects that are surrounding me at the time the brush touches the surface, blur, overlay and weave into a dreamscape of ethereal moments. The drama of the light as the sun rises; at the end of the day as it casts it's long dark shadows and when the light has almost disappeared are all moments that captivate me.

The twenty-two years that I lived in London created a surface of cosmopolitanism underlain by nature's mulch from my earlier years in the country. My strength and nutrients arrive from the earth. My paintings are inspired by real places and memories. Photos, sketches, notes and memory help me recapture what might have been a fleeting inspiration. Using a limited palette, mainly on Baltic birch panels and at times linen, I work in layers of opaque paint and glazes. I am fascinated by the subtleties in colour created by glazes. Glazes, light beams for my imagination. I constantly strive for new modes of expressing the textures of my imagination. The immediacy of monotypes and encaustics have inspired me to pare down to the bare bones, clarifying the vital elements which voice the joy that I find in the beauty of the land and through the day's transitional moments.

Painting is my survival kit, the essence of my living. Tranquility, the silence of a meadow, the deep eternity of a forest glen replenishes me. Quiet, ethereal moments and memories of mistiness, mysterious shapes, water, reflections and glowing light create an ambient presence, a presence that creates a thrall for me, a thrall that causes me to continue painting.
